Epilepsy, A Magnesium Deficiency

I was watching a news documentary on the issue of marijuana in the Philippines and they featured this family whose child has been suffering from epilepsy.  They have been giving their child the usual allopathic medicines but in the long run the medication has only given temporary relief and the parents are wary of the long term side effects.

According to Mayo Clinic’s definition of epilepsy, this disease is a central nervous system disorder in which the nerve cell activity in your brain is disturbed, causing a seizure during which you experience abnormal behavior, symptoms and sensations.  Symptoms of seizures include blank staring, confusion, psychic symptoms, unconsciousness or loss of awareness and uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.

The parents are members of an advocacy group called Philippines Moms for Marijuana.  The objective of their group is to push Congress to pass a resolution legalizing marijuana for medical use in conditions such as epilepsy and others.  Unfortunately, since the country has very strict drug laws based on US drug laws, even the possession of marijuana is considered a criminal offense.

As early as 1959, Dr. Lewis Barnett wrote “Clinical Studies of Magnesium Deficiency in Epilepsy,” wherein he determined that serum magnesium has a vital role on the central nervous system and that a deficiency in this mineral is directly linked to epilepsy.  He has also determined clinically that deficient serum magnesium levels may be raised by the adequate intake of some suitable magnesium compound.

Marijuana is no doubt a medicine which could be used to treat a whole range of diseases such as epilepsy but if parents would find it difficult to acquire this plant because of the present circumstances then I recommend that you have your loved ones blood tested first for magnesium deficiency and see if their condition could be simply treated by magnesium supplementation.
